Men's 20-km individual: Robin Clegg, Ottawa, placed 28th of 87 finalists.
Curling
Men: Edmonton team of skip Kevin Martin, third Don Walchuk, second Carter Rycroft and lead Don Bartlett def. Britain 6-4 in first draw of round-robin championship, then won 8-3 over U.S. in second.
Women: Richmond B.C., team of skip Kelley Law, third Julie Skinner, second Georgina Wheatcraft and lead Diane Nelson def. Sweden 5-4 in first draw of round-robin championship.
Figure Skating
Pairs (free program): Jamie Sale, Red Deer, Alta., and David Pelletier, Sayabec, Que., won silver medal, creating sweeping controversy over judges' marks; Jacinthe Lariviere, Princeville, Que., and Lenny Faustino, Woodbridge, Ont., were 10th in a field of 20.; Anabelle Langlois and Patrice Archetto, Longueuil, wound up 12th.
Hockey
Women: Canada opened preliminary round with a 7-0 win over Kazakhstan.
Luge
Men's singles: Kyle Connelly, Calgary, placed 11th of 50 competitors in four runs; Chris Moffat, Calgary, finished 14th; Tyler Seitz, Calgary, wound up 19th.
Snowboarding
Men's halfpipe: Trevor Andrew, Falmouth, N.S., finished ninth in final; Brett Carpentier, Ste-Jovite, Que., was 22nd after two runs, eliminated; Mike Michalchuk, Calgary, was 27th in a field of 33, eliminated.
Speed Skating
Long Track
Men's 500: Mike Ireland, Winnipeg, finished sixth of 38 competitors in first race qualifying; Patrick Bouchard, Cap-Rouge, Que., was 20th; Eric Brisson, Ste-Foy, Que., was 24th; Jeremy Wotherspoon, Red Deer, did not finish, eliminated from medals.
