Cherie Whelan knows the feeling of stepping on the podium at a major international event. Whelan, a former rower who was inducted into the Royal St. John's Regatta Hall of Fame this past summer, won a bronze medal at the world bobsleigh championships in 1999. She'd like to repeat that experience at the Salt Lake City Games this February.

"I want to win the Olympic gold medal," said Whelan, a brakeman who is one of the top pushers in the world. "To be on the podium listening to the national anthem would be amazing."

Last season Whelan posted top-10 performances with pilots Sarah Monk and Christina Smith. She also works as a claims auditor for the Workmen's Compensation Board of Alberta in Calgary.
