Goaltending is one of Sami Jo Small's many talents. She earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Stanford University while on a track and field scholarship. She competed as a javelin thrower and was a goaltender on the men's hockey team. She's also an excellent painter.
Small was a spare on the 1998 Olympic team and didn't dress for any games. She played in the following three world championships. In 1999 and 2000 she was named the top goalie at the worlds and was selected to the all star team. Prior to this season she had allowed more than one goal only twice in international play. Last season with her club, the Brampton Thunder, she scored a goal.
