Cindy Overland overcame her fourth bout with mononucleosis this past summer and qualified for her second Olympic team at trials in December. Overland will race her best event, the 1'500 metres at the Salt Lake Games. She also excels in the 3'000.
This past fall, Overland decided to stay home rather than compete on the World Cup circuit. She wanted to train and prepare for those trials. It was a risky choice.
"Staying home made it difficult to gauge how strong I'd be at the trials'" said Overland, the Canadian all around champion from 1997-2000. "While I didn't skate a personal best at trials my performance still gave me a lot of confidence."
Overland was Canada's top middle distance skater in the late 90's until the sudden emergence of Cindy Klassen. Her brother Kevin Overland was the Olympic bronze medallist in the 500 at the 1998 Games but didn't make the team this year. Neither did her younger sister Amanda in short track speed skating.
Cindy Overland did not have pleasant experience at the Nagano Games. She was struck with the flu but still competed in the 3'000. However she was forced to withdraw from the 1'500 and was bed-ridden for nine days.
