Kevin Marshall continues his family tradition for speed skating excellence. His brothers Neil (a former World Cup champion and three-time Olympian), Mike (now the national team coach) and Steve have all enjoyed success in the sport. Their great grandfather Klaas Hanje was a Dutch speed skating champion and an uncle, Joe Hanje, a former Canadian national team member.
At the Olympic trials, Marshall was a surprise qualifier in the 1'000 and added the 1'500- his best event- to his Game schedule as well. He is also among Canada's best 5'000 and 10'000-metre racers.
"I'm trying to approach these Olympics in a much more relaxed fashion'" said Marshall, 26th in the 1'500 at his first Games in 1998. "I know I have the potential to challenge for the top positions."
In his spare time, Marshall enjoys woodworking, although two years ago he severed the tip of his thumb in an accident, playing drums for a band called South Bound Sedan, and riding motorcycles.
