Along with
Mélanie Turgeon, Allison Forsyth is leading the charge for Canadian women atop the world rankings once again in alpine skiing.
She enjoyed another great winter on the World Cup circuit placing eighth in the giant slalom standings. Her sixth place in the GS at the world
championships was Canada's best finish in the event at worlds since 1970. She posted that result two days after crashing in the slalom which
sent her to the hospital with whiplash.
In her first full World Cup campaign in 1999-2000 she posted her first two career World Cup medal performances and was fifth overall in the GS.
A year earlier her 10th place in slalom at the 1999 worlds was the best Canadian result in that event since 1954.
"I learned a lot mentally (last season)," said Forsyth. "It was a tough year for me. I was focused too much on results and not on the actual skiing.
I was too concerned to prove the previous year wasn't a fluke."
Forsyth knows she'll be touted as a Canadian medal hopeful in her Olympic debut at Salt Lake City
"There are so many variables in ski racking," she said. "A lot of luck is involved. My attitude will have to be 100 percent confident. I want to know
that I can win."
Last season she won her fifth consecutive giant slalom national title and eighth overall tying her with Olympic champion Kathy Kreiner for the
most career Canadian crowns.
