Steven Elm qualified for the 1'500-metre event in long track speed skating at the Olympic trials in December. Elm has posted inconsistent results the past few seasons but has shown he can be among the top skaters in the world in the middle and long distance events.
Leading up to the 1998 Olympics, Elm had won the Canadian all around title, earned a World Cup medal and posted two top-10 finishes at the world championships. But at the Games he struggled, finishing 25th in the 1'500 and 23rd in the 5'000.
At the 1999 worlds he finished in the top-10 three times and in 2000 was fifth in the 1'500 at the world single distance championships.
