Being tough is an important element to success in snowboarding. Trevor Andrew certainly demonstrated his durability at a recent World Cup
event to qualify for the Olympic Games in the men's halfpipe.
Andrew split his lip for four stitches in training, and in the preliminaries he cut his finger which was heavily bandaged for the final. In his second
run in the final he attempted a difficult manoeuvre and flew 15 feet in the air and crashed landed injuring his shoulder. Thankfully for Andrew the
best of two runs counts towards the final mark in the final
"He's a tough kid and he was going for the gold in that second run," said Canadian coach Tom Hutchison. "He's thrilled he'll have a chance to
go to the Olympics."
Andrew, who's specialty is a 13-foot McTwist move, has two career World Cup victories both at Mont-Ste-Anne, Que., in 1997 and 2000. He
placed 29th in halfpipe at the 1998 Olympics. He was Nova Scotia's male athlete of the year in 1998.
He admits Nova Scotia wasn't exactly a skiing or snowboard hotbed growing up but that didn't dampen his spirit for the sport. "Learning to ride
in Nova Scotia was a great thing for me because it taught me to use the resources I had but still have super fun, even though there were small
hills and limited skate spots there," he said.
