Picture perfect for skaters

By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun

SALT LAKE CITY -- Figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier are everywhere these days.

A day after being awarded the gold medal by the International Olympic Committee, the two were on the ice with Team Canada to have their picture taken with the boys.

Sale and Pelletier were squeezed in beside executive director Wayne Gretzky in the front row before the club's light workout at a suburban arena.

"Look at me, I made the team and I didn't have to try out," Pelletier told a woman sitting in the stands while decked out in his Team Canada jersey with the No. 02 on the back.

Gretzky's father Walter Gretzky then requested a picture with the two, who were more than accommodating.

GOING FOR A SKATE: Rangers G Mike Richter was expected to start for the Americans last night after going for a late twirl Friday at the E Center. Following Team USA's 6-0 win over Finland, Richter appeared on the ice at 11:30 p.m. in skates and a track suit working on his angles. He stayed out there until D Brian Leetch and F Mike York beckoned him off the ice around midnight so they could get back to the Olympic Village.

 BIG NEWS IN SWEDEN:

The Swedes victory over Canada made headlines in the tabloids back home, but many of the morning papers missed the story. According to Swedish writers, the game didn't end until 2:15 a.m., which meant only the tabloids that come out at 10 a.m. in Stockholm were able to get the story in the paper. The two big papers in the country -- Aftonbladt and Expressen -- both ran six pages on the game with most of the attention centred on Swedish captain Mats Sundin and Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson. Following practice, Alfredsson said: "I'm going to try to convince (Senators coach) Jacques Martin to play the Torpedo in Ottawa. It might work for us."

SITTING IN THE STANDS: After allowing five goals in the opener against Team USA, Ottawa G Jani Hurme sat in the stands for last night's game against Belarus. Instead, minor-league Pasi Nurminen started in net.
