Sledders take pride in scar tissue

By STEVE BUFFERY -- Toronto Sun
Canadian bosledders Yannik Morin and Guilio Zardo brought their fancy new sled for a visit to the Toronto Sun yesterday. - Craig Robertson, Toronto Sun

The bobsled team of pilot Yannik Morin and brakeman Guilio Zardo have turned plenty of heads on the World Cup circuit this year.

After four events, the Canada 2 tandem sits in ninth-place overall and has finished in the top 10 on three occasions -- a tremendous accomplishment considering that Zardo, 21, is a rookie on the circuit and Morin, 26, only has been driving for a couple of years.

This athletic duo -- Morin is a former bodybuilder and Zardo a football player -- has a huge future, but already Morin has the telltale bobsledder's scar on the right side of his face.

Many of the world's top sledders proudly sport facial scars. But while Morin's is certainly macho looking, it did not come via a spectacular crash.

"Using an exacto knife, I cut the back of a guy's jeans in art class and he got very upset," said Morin, who looks like Alex Mogilny's twin brother. "So he waited for me on the school bus to cut my jeans, but the knife slipped up and cut my face. Very deep ... I had to use my phys-ed clothes, my socks, my shirt, my shorts, to stop the blood."
