Surrounded by mountains that rise more then 10,000
feet, Salt Lake City mirrors a prominent combination of history, culture
and recreation.
Settled in 1847 by Mormon pioneers seeking an escape from persecution,
Salt Lake City provided settlers with a vast land mass certain for
farming.
In the years that followed, Salt Lake City has grown to reveal a strong western
heritage at every turn of the road. Mountain vistas, snow-capped peaks
and seven year-round resorts less then an hour's drive from the city's
international airport, have all made Salt Lake City a good place to reside. In the
winter you can ski and snow board at world class destination resorts
like Alta, Snowbird or The Park City Mountain resort. In the summer you
can visit the same resorts and do more hiking and mountain biking than
you could possibly cover on your first visit to Utah.
Of course there is the Great Salt Lake itself. Salt Lake is actually a
remainder of the prehistoric Lake Bonneville, which covered some 20,000
square miles of land in what now is Utah, Nevada and Idaho,
approximately 10,000 to 30,000 years ago. Salt Lake is presently 92
miles long and 48 miles wide.
