Pan Am Games and Canadian 3,000-metre steeplechase champion Joel Bourgeois
heads to his second Olympic Games. In 1996 he was eliminated in the
semifinal. The previous year he captured Canada's only medal in athletics
at the 1995 World University Games. Bourgeois began running at age 11
after watching his father in the provincial road racing series. Joel
Bourgeois was named male Athlete of the Year at l'Universite de Moncton
from 1990-1995.
Bourgeois graduated in 1999 with a degree in musical interpretation and
classical guitar from Moncton. He had started out his studies in
engineering and switched into the music program. His father Paul, a
retired teacher, competed in the 800 metres at the 1991 Veteran's World
Championships in Finland, where he set a Canadian record for the 50+ age
group.
